Why You'll Love this Strawberry Matcha Smoothie
- This matcha smoothie makes a perfect light and nutritious breakfast or daytime snack.
- Matcha contains caffeine, giving this smoothie an energizing boost that can be best enjoyed in the morning or early afternoon!
- This smoothie is super simple to make, requiring just 5 minutes of hands-on time. For a layered smoothie, you'll need to freeze the bottom layer for at least 20 minutes.
Ingredients and Variations
This recipe is made in two layers: a bottom strawberry layer and a top matcha layer.
For the bottom layer, you will need:
- Milk - Use your favourite flavored or unflavored plant-based milk. For this recipe, I used almond milk. Coconut milk (the carton type) is also a great option, making this smoothie even creamier!
- Yogurt - You can use any type and flavor yogurt. To make this low-calorie, I used plain, low-fat Greek yogurt. You can also swap yogurt for a frozen banana.
- Strawberries - Frozen fruit always work best in smoothies. You can also swap strawberries with your favourite fruit such as mango, blueberries, or pineapple; just make sure they are frozen! Tip: Tropical fruits tend to go very well with matcha!
- Sweetener - Use your favourite sweetener such as honey, agave syrup, or maple syrup.
For the top matcha layer, you will need:
- Matcha - Use high-quality matcha powder for best flavor.
- Coconut cream - If this is not available or if you don't like coconut cream, you can substitute with yogurt. Ideally, try to use white yogurt for this layer to bring out the bright green colors of matcha.
- Yogurt - You can use any type and flavor yogurt, ideally white. To make this low-calorie, I used plain, low-fat Greek yogurt.
- Sweetener - Use your favourite sweetener such as honey, agave syrup, or maple syrup.
- Topping - Use flaked or shredded coconut, fresh fruit, or your favourite smoothie topping!
How to Make Strawberry Matcha Smoothie
Prepare the bottom strawberry layer:
- Blend bottom layer ingredients in a kitchen blender until smooth.
- Pour mixture in smoothie glasses/jars.
- Freeze for at least 20-30 minutes. Freezing hardens the bottom layer and will help achieve a layered smoothie effect. If you you skip this step, layers may mush together.
- Blend top layer ingredients (except for coconut flakes) in a blender until smooth.
- Pour mixture, using a funnel, on top of the hardened strawberry layer.
- Top with shredded or flaked coconut, fresh fruit, or your favourite toppings!
Note: Depending on your preferred smoothie texture and on the fruit you choose to add, you may need to add more or less milk and/or yogurt.
FAQs
How long does this strawberry matcha smoothie keep for? Can it be made ahead?
The best way to make ahead and store this smoothie is by preparing it in a freezer-safe mason jar and freeze for up to 2-3 months. Defrost the smoothie overnight in the refrigerator or for a few hours at room temperature and serve.
You can also store ready-made smoothies in a refrigerator for 1-2 days. However, be aware that separation of layers may occur after a day or so.
What kind of Matcha should I use?
My suggestion is always to use a high-quality matcha powder that is available for you. When baking with matcha, I always suggest to use premium grade matcha to prevent discoloration, but since no baking is required here, regular drinking matcha works just as good.
Can I make this Vegan?
Yes! Simply swap the yogurt with frozen banana or coconut cream. I have only made this using yogurt though, so I cannot guarantee perfectly formed layers if you eliminate yogurt.
Also, make sure to use plant-based milk and vegan-friendly sweeteners, such as maple syrup.
This Strawberry Matcha Smoothie is so simple to make and I guarantee you will fall in love with these flavors in no time! It's super refreshing in summer, loaded with nutrients, and can be easily adapted by swapping in your favourite ingredients!
